Blended ROAS vs Platform ROAS: Stop Letting Channels Grade Their Own Homework

Here's a number that should worry you: add up the revenue each ad platform claims it generated, and it often exceeds your actual total revenue. Meta takes credit for the sale. Google takes credit for the same sale. Your email tool wants a piece too. Every channel is grading its own homework, and they're all giving themselves an A.

Make budget decisions off those platform-reported ROAS figures and you'll confidently scale a channel that's mostly claiming credit for sales that would have happened anyway — while the business as a whole quietly loses money.

Blended ROAS: the number that can't lie to you

Blended ROAS is brutally simple: total revenue divided by total ad spend, across every channel. It doesn't care which platform claims the conversion. It can't be double-counted. It's the closest paid-media proxy you have for what's actually happening to the business.

When you scale spend and blended ROAS holds or improves, you're genuinely growing. When platform ROAS looks great but blended ROAS is sliding, the channels are taking credit for each other's work and your incremental spend is buying very little.

How to operationalize it

  • Build one view of total spend against total revenue, updated on the same cadence you make budget decisions.
  • Pair it with contribution margin so you're optimizing toward profit, not just top-line revenue.
  • Use platform metrics for in-channel optimization — creative, audiences, bids — but use blended numbers for budget allocation.
  • Watch the relationship as you scale: rising spend with stable or improving blended ROAS is the only proof that growth is real.

Platforms are optimization tools, not scorekeepers. The moment you let them tell you how the business is doing, you've handed the scorecard to a player with an obvious incentive to flatter the result. Keep score yourself.
